In 2002, 2003 and 2004 I worked for a pair of very different Southern California newspapers. At one, in the posh desert city of Palm Springs, I wrote stories exposing the financial dealings of the pastor of the largest megachurch in the area. At the other, in the blue-collar redoubt of San Bernardino, I covered wildfires and the largest county in the Lower 48, which allowed me to explore and break news from some rather isolated places.
